As part of a massive initiative to regulate thousands of substances in the Canadian marketplace, the federal government became the first country in the world to declare bisphenol A (BPA)"toxic" in April 2008. This decision was not based on a scientific consensus that human safety is at risk, but was a product of the complex interaction of institutional imperatives, media coverage, interest group lobbying and public opinion. This case offers a rich opportunity to understand how individual psychology and macropolitical forces influence risk perception and management to the detriment of a public interest.

Talk by Simon Kiss, a political scientist in Wilfrid Laurier University's Journalism Program with an outgoing research program examining the relationship between risks and medai, public opinion and policy.
