Join Stephen McBride and Heather Whiteside for the launch of The Canadian State!
What does the Canadian state do, and in whose interests does it act? Are there identifiable patterns to state activities in capitalism, or do activities change over time as capitalism evolves? What role is played by the balance of social forces related to divisions of class, race, and gender? How important are institutional complexities within the state itself and the role of organizations based in civil society? Questions such as these drive this book, and its aim is to provide a concrete analysis of the role of the Canadian state in the first quarter of the twenty-first century.
The book’s chapters analyze discrete issue areas just as they offer new theoretical insights into the political economy of the state writ large, including land ownership ( Heather Whiteside); settler colonialism (Adam Barker); extractivism (Anna Stanley); energy ( Julie MacArthur); services (Peter Graefe); care work (Marjorie Cohen); grassroots dynamics (Joy Schnittker);democracy (Dennis Pilon); finance (Dan Cohen); commercialization ( Chris Hurl); employment (Carlo Fanelli); and trade and investment (Stephen McBride).
