‘Closed Ports’ and the Criminalization of Solidarity in the Mediterranean

Michael Gordon, PhD Candidate, recently published an article on The Globe Post examining the growing criminalization of civil society search and rescue efforts in the Mediterranean Sea

May 30, 2019

Michael Gordon (PhD Candidate, McMaster University) and Vicki Squire (Professor, University of Warwick) have recently published an Op-Ed in the Globe Post. The article looks at the most recent declaration by the Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, that Italian ports would be formally closed to civil society search and rescue NGOs operating at sea. This is the latest move by the Italian government to further criminalize rescue organizations responding boat migration in the Mediterranean, which remains one of the deadliest border crossings for people on the move. While the EU continues to attack civil society efforts to respond to the violent enactment of European borders at sea, NGOs remain committed to defending solidarity with people on the move and upholding human rights in the Mediterranean.
