Congratulations to sasha skaidra who successfully defended her doctoral thesis
sasha skaidra successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled: Remapping Sanctuary: Political Theology and Ontario Border Enforcement
Dec 21, 2022
sasha’s dissertation critically analyses the emergence of Sanctuary Cities as spaces of refuge for irregular migrants. The dissertation cautions against uncritically celebrating sanctuary cities, arguing that they can reproduce as much as resist dominant modes of citizenship, territoriality, and borders. Through the creative use of (counter-)mapping tools, the dissertation offers a novel visual perspective on immigration enforcement, detention, and deportation practices in Ontario.
sasha’s committee included Dr. Peter Nyers (Supervisor), Dr. Marshall Beier, and Dr. Alina Sajed. Thank you to Dr. Chandrima Chakraborty (English & Cultural Studies) for serving as Chair of the defense and to Dr. William Walters (Carleton University) for serving as the External Examiner.
