Dr. Netina Tan

Dr. Netina Tan named University Scholar

Congratulations to Dr. Netina Tan on being named University Scholar, 2021-2025.

May 03, 2021

Dr. Netina Tan has been named University Scholar, a title bestowed by the University to recognize faculty members in mid-career who have already distinguished themselves as international scholars. She will hold this position for four years, commencing July 1, 2021. Dr. Tan’s research focuses on electoral politics, authoritarianism, gender and politics, digital threats to democracy, and digital media and elections in East Asia. The award speaks to Netina’s exceptional record of scholarly productivity, including her publications in numerous high impact journals and university presses, and her leadership role in multiple international collaborative research endeavors. It also recognizes her impact and innovation as a teacher, as well as her deep commitment to considering the real world implications of the problems she studies. Among her many projects, Netina recently received funding from the IRDC (International Development Research Centre) to continue her pioneering work on gender and political parties in Myanmar, research she is conducting in collaboration with local organizations in the context of challenges to democratization and free and fair elections in that country.

Congratulations Netina on this well-deserved honour!
