PhD Candidate, Phil Faanu awarded Brooke and Irene Townsend School!

Phil’s research examines the intersection of gender and the political economy of natural resource extraction in the Global South and Global North. His dissertation delves into the gender dynamics of stakeholder engagement in mineral extraction, with the ultimate objective of evaluating how stakeholder engagement practices in mineral-rich communities either facilitate or hinder gender equality.
Phil Faanu is currently collaborating with his supervisor, Dr. Nathan Andrews, and a team of researchers on the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Grant Project: Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement in Resource-Rich Communities: Comparative Cases from the Global South and High North. His dissertation also contributes to this project. He is also collaborating with his supervisor, Dr. Nathan Andrews, and other colleagues on an edited book project: Just Extraction and Just Transition: Critical Minerals Extraction and Decarbonization in Africa.
Phil is also part of a cohort of students and scholars admitted to the Arctic Academy at Copenhagen Business School for a week of PhD training, supported by “The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.”
Phil is deeply honored and grateful to receive this prestigious award. I also extend my sincere gratitude to the department, graduate school, and scholarship committee for recognizing Phil’s contributions and deeming them worthy of this esteemed award.
