Radical Political Theory

Our department has exceptional research strength in radical political theories, from post-colonial thought, to critical theory, to political philosophy surrounding nationalism, indigeneity, and migration. Our close association with McMaster's Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition also provides a rich set of resources for students interested in the study of radical political thought.

Digital Democracy

How are digitization and social media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram are changing the configuration of public spheres in democracies? Researchers in the Department of Political Science are tackling issues like greater freedom of expression, facilitating citizens' ability to challenge or promote democratic rights in authoritarian regimes; the implications of machine intelligence for electoral politics, political communication, and voting behaviour; the spread of fake news and hate speech.
