Roundtable on Trump and Canada

US President Donald Trump’s recent policy initiatives have unsettled established international order by challenging old alliances with Europe and traditional American allies. Whether it is declaring an interest in acquiring Greenland for American territory, siding with Russia in the Ukraine war, or threatening to take back the Panama Canal, President Trump has caused doubt and confusion about his true intentions. His economic warfare against Canada and questioning of Canadian sovereignty have generated deep concern amongst the Canadian public and influenced electoral politics.

In response to these events about 100 faculty, undergraduate and graduate students attended a Political Science Roundtable discussion on Trump, Canada-US Relations and the Federal Election on Thursday April 3rd. Professor Don Abelson contextualized Canada – US relations and highlighted possible future developments. Dr. Andrea Lawlor analyzed the increasing gulf between Canadians and Americans on trade policy, while Dr. Peter Graefe discussed the influence of Canadian nationalism and future Canada – US negotiations. The ensuing discussion provided attendees an opportunity to share views and concerns about the challenges facing Canada during the Trump presidency.
