Is a central bank digital currency really so loonie?
Digital Society Lab members Ori Freiman, Anwar Sheluchin (PhD student), Jordan Mansell and John McAndrews have published an op-ed in The Globe and Mail discussing Bill C-400, which aims to protect cash usage and prohibit the Bank of Canada from issuing a central bank digital currency.
In this piece, the researchers call for greater engagement from both elected officials and the public on the potential introduction of a digital Canadian dollar. They also share preliminary findings from their study, which replicated the Bank of Canada’s public consultation and revealed substantial differences in public responses.
Alex Beyer (Postdoctoral Fellow) and Dr. Clifton van der Linden (Associate Professor) contributed to the design of the study.
