Articles published by PhD Candidate Joanna Massie and Associate Professor Dr. Katherine Boothe
Articles co-written by members of the Department of Political Science were published in a special issue of Healthcare Policy last week.
Joanna Massie, PhD Candidate, and Dr. Katherine Boothe, Associate Professor, were involved in writing the following articles:
Recruiting for Engagement in Health Policy (Joanna Massie and Katherine Boothe)
Boothe and Massie attempt to align theories of recruiting for engagement with reflections on how it works in practice, reflecting on their experience in recruiting for a workshop about public engagement. They note concern with attempts of “recruitmentology,” or technocratic solutions to engagement, instead arguing that policymakers need to invest time in advance of the engagement to build meaningful partnerships.
Trends in Government-Initiated Public Engagement in Canadian Health Policy From 2000 to 2021 (Roma Dhamanaskar, Katherine Boothe, Joanna Massie, Jeonghwa You, Danielle Just, Grace Kuang, and Julia Abelson)
The team explored trends in cases of public engagement around health over twenty years at the federal, provincial and pan-Canadian levels. They find a heavy reliance on more passive, indirect approaches that limit problem-solving, and processes that fail to include equity-deserving populations.
Dr. Boothe also contributed to the special issue’s introduction, Public Engagement in Canadian Health Policy: Looking Back, Taking Stock, and Charting the Future.
The special issue also features two articles written by community leaders in Canada, Camille Orridge and Lanre Tunji-Ajayi, who reflect on their decades of experience advocating for Black communities in Ontario; and an article from Dr. Jamila Mitchener about conducting ethical and transformative scholarly public engagement. The special issue is the final output of Public Engagement in Health Policy, based out of McMaster University and supported by the Future of Canada project.
