Alicja Paulina Krubnik, an PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science (International Relations) is a recipient of multiple prestigious awards by both the International Development Research Council (IDRC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Last year, Alicja was one of ten CGS Doctoral Fellows to receive the “CGS to Honour Nelson Mandela” distinction from SSHRC. Alicja’s doctoral research examines the international political economy of energy transitions in Ecuador and Brazil. She examines how development financing impacts the opportunities and challenges faced by these emerging economy governments in the context of energy transitions. Her dissertation focuses on transforming key developmental aspects associated with (neo-) extractivisim to realize environmentally, socially, and economically just sustainable development. Alicja will be working with academic and civil society organisations in Ecuador and Brazil over the course of the Winter and Spring 2025 terms. She will be researching dynamics between states and development finance institutions, government development plans. Alicja will also be lecturing and conducting workshops, contributing to the academic life in her research settings. Her fieldwork is supported by SSHRC’s International Development Research Award (IDRC-IDRA) and SSHRC’s Canada Graduate Scholarship Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS).
